RADIO PERSONALITY

Bea Bonner – NPR Illinois

For many of us, the cheery and inquisitive voice of Bea Bonner defined the midday listening experience in central Illinois. As the "Community Voices" editor and co-host for the NPR Illinois station based in Springfield, Bea's daily mission was to turn a microphone toward locals who make the region tick. Day after day, she embodied the best of public radio's commitment to civic engagement, giving the often-unsung heroes of Springfield a chance to tell their story. Her interviews included everyone from ghost hunters and theater directors to small business owners and health experts. She also coordinated different audience outreach programs such as the inspiring "This I Believe" essay contest for area high school students.

This dedication to digging deep into local people and community highlights is one of the reasons why NPR is so important and popular nationwide. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025, NPR Illinois relies on listener support to provide quality journalism and cultural programming free from commercial pressures. The popularity of its national reach combined with the locally focused member stations such as 91.9 UIS is what listeners and readers value so much. Bea Bonner's work on "Community Voices" demonstrated this synergy by guaranteeing countless central Illinois stories were not just told, but heard and appreciated.

While she will no longer be working in broadcasting, having just left NPR Illinois for a new job with the state, Bonner said in a recent interview with Springfield Business Journal that people in the community haven't heard the last of her.

"I've been doing radio since high school, and I will always love radio and podcasting," she said. "I'm excited for this new opportunity, but I plan to still be involved (in the community) in some way. Keep your eyes and ears open; I'll be doing something in the near future."
