SEAFOOD, BEST FRIED SEAFOOD

Chesapeake Seafood House

On a recent visit to the Chesapeake, the Muzak version of Carly Simon's "Nobody Does It Better" played overhead and, after noshing on the baked stuffed shrimp at the early bird price of $13.99, the song was most apropos.

First off, try finding that price for such an entrée anywhere east of the Mississippi. You can't. At last check, the online menu of a popular seafood spot on Cape Cod lists the baked stuffed shrimp at $38.

Since 1987, when it was previously known as the Southern Air restaurant, the stately Chesapeake Seafood House has served Springfielders with fish flown in daily and still kept the prices old-school.

One of the few restaurants that has a lower-priced early bird menu, the place started getting packed not long after its 3:30 p.m. opening. With reliable seafood standbys, including fried whole catfish and lobster with all the trimmings, it's no wonder the Chesapeake still tops the charts all these years later.
