The Railyard on Route 66 is Springfield's first and only outdoor food court, offering a lively and casual gathering spot perfect for families and friends. Built around repurposed shipping containers, the fun, casual outdoor atmosphere features seating for about 100 guests, a good amount of nearby parking and outdoor heaters and fire pits for when the weather cools.
The Railyard was initially launched in the fall of 2023 but reopened this spring with new operators Tim and Emily Lewis – already well-known in the local food scene thanks to their various business ventures under the Three Twigs & Co. umbrella.
The variety of food options is another one of the features that makes The Railyard a unique destination and a favorite with readers. There are several local micro-restaurants, each specializing in something different. You can choose from Mexican favorites at El Dorado, delicious homestyle options from The Meatball Guy (you must try the fried smashed potatoes), and barbecue from The Stadium Smokehouse, plus Froggy's Groovy Goodies and sweets from the Best Day Ever Bakeshop. Kids will especially enjoy state fair-type options such mini doughnuts, shaved ice and lemonade shake-ups, among other delights.
Beyond the food, The Railyard is a hub for entertainment and is a genuinely kid-friendly venue. There are yard games and toy construction equipment, perfect for digging in the gravel that encompasses the picnic-style seating area. The space includes a modest outdoor stage that regularly hosts live local music on weekends, as well as recurring events like trivia, karaoke and open mic comedy nights.
With the variety of vendors, regular performances and a relaxed, open environment, The Railyard promises to keep delivering fun and food for the whole family. And with the Route 66 centennial coming in 2026, The Railyard promises to be an even more popular stop for both locals and those passing through.
