Floyd Mansberger "Historical Archaeology: Giving Voice to the Victims of the 1908 Race Riot and the Creation of a National Monument."
Archaeological research at the site of the 1908 Springfield Race Riot has contributed significantly to giving a new “voice” to the victims of the horrific events that occurred one hot weekend in August 1908. Based on the results of the archaeological research, this presentation will highlight the lives of several victims who lived at the Tenth and Madison Street intersection at that time, and debunk contemporary 1908 perceptions of who these victims were.
