What can you say about these perennial winners other than they are the best of the best, taking this category many times (and not just in Springfield but Iowa and Missouri contests, too) over the course of their 25-year-existence. Conceived by the one-and only J Bird in 1996 after watching the Tom Hanks film That Thing You Do where the moniker of Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters originated, he got things going in 2000 and they've not looked back since.
Known for those amazing, continuous, three-hour shows without a break that bring the popular music of the last four decades to the stage, J Bird and crew (they've rotated a few members through the years) bring it on like nobody's business and keep the pedal to the metal to entertain the crowds – and they do draw the crowds. Along with a steady stream of bookings (bolstered by sponsorship from Robert "Chick" Fritz Distributing, one of the largest downstate beer distributors) all through the Midwest at every fair and festival, bar and club big enough to hold 'em, CG & the SSSs just keep on keeping on.
Join the Geechers for their official 25-year celebration on Nov. 22 at Twisted Tree Music and Event Hall in Jacksonville, back where it all started for J Bird and the band, now the best in the land.
