America's Civil War: Then and Now

The Civil War transformed American society in ways that are still contested and incomplete. Abraham Lincoln’s words and actions continue to frame the aspirations and debates around American politics.

Dr. Jeremi Suri, author of Civil War by Other Means, will examine the many legacies of the Civil War and how knowledge of those legacies can improve our democracy today. The U.S. will not fight another civil war, but the Civil War is not over yet.

Suri holds the Mack Brown Distinguished Chair for Leadership in Global Affairs at the University of Texas-Austin.
