Introduction to Domes: Origin, Evolution, & Structure

Architect David L. Finnigan will give a broad overview of domes and cupolas: origin, meaning, application, structural evolution, forces and failure modes. After covering the ancient origin and symbolism of the dome, several example building types which are commonly crowned with a dome will be shown. Next will come the structural evolution of domes, beginning with ancient examples, proceeding to Renaissance domes and concluding with modern iron-framed domes. The principal structural forces present in domes will be covered. Presentation is oriented to architects, but is accessible to all. Part of AIA Illinois Prairie Grassroots Advocacy Day.
