Named after the Latin word for “hope,” the choir is a collection of area music teachers, performers, and professionals. Spero will perform two concerts this year on July 2nd at 7:00pm at Christ the King Catholic Church and July 3rd at 2:00pm at First Presbyterian Church. The choir’s founder and conductor, Dr. Abby Musgrove, is happy to share live music with the public again. “Last summer, we made a few videos with no audience. They came out great, and we were happy to be together and sing together, but the whole point of our group is to share music and hope with others,” said Musgrove. “We are excited to finally invite an audience again!” This year’s performance is entitled Hope Is The Thing With Feathers: a Choral Celebration of Faith, Perseverance, and New Beginnings.” The concert will include a variety of styles, including classic choral works such as the well-known Renaissance motet O Magnum Mysterium by Tomás Luis de Victoria and an arrangement of the beloved hymn How Great Thou Art by living composer Dan Forrest. Other offerings include an arrangement of the Lord’s Prayer by 19th Century Ukrainian composer Mykola Dmytrovych and a lively arrangement of early-American folk hymn Unclouded Day by Shawn Kirchner. Lighter selections include an arrangement of U2’s MLK, Dolly Parton’s Light of a Clear Blue Morning, and Gospel favorite His Eye is on the Sparrow. The choir plans to pepper the performance with patriotic selections in honor of Independence weekend, and individual members of the choir will offer solos in multiple styles. The concerts are free and open to the public, but donations are appreciated.
