Women in Baseball: The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League

Let’s play ball! Learn more about the history of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and its ties to Illinois. As famously quoted by Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own, “There’s no crying in baseball!” Founded by Philip K. Wrigley, the AAGPBL formed fifteen baseball teams throughout the upper Midwest between 1943 and 1954. In 1948, Springfield, Illinois was added to the League. As a result, the team became known as the Springfield Sallies and played at Fitzpatrick Memorial Stadium in Springfield, IL for one season.
